How this calculator works
The calculator adds a 10% waste allowance on top of your actual yard area — artificial turf has a directional grain, so every piece must run the same way, which costs more material than trimming real sod or gravel. It then estimates infill weight using standard application rates for the infill type you choose.
300 sq ft × 1.10 = 330 sq ft of turf. Infill: 300 × 1.5 lb = 450 lbs → 9 bags (50 lb each).
Why turf needs more waste than sod
Turf rolls are typically 12–15 ft wide, and every seam must line up with the pile direction (the "grain") so the seams don’t show. On odd-shaped or narrow yards this can push waste well above 10% — measure your longest run against the roll width before ordering.
Frequently asked questions
How much artificial turf do I need for a 300 sq ft yard?
Order about 330 sq ft (10% extra) to allow for seaming and trimming to match the grain direction.
How much infill does artificial turf need?
Silica sand infill is typically applied at about 1–2 lbs per sq ft; rubber crumb infill runs a bit heavier at roughly 2 lbs per sq ft. Some premium turf comes pre-infilled and needs none.
