How this calculator works
Carpet is priced by the square yard. The calculator finds your room’s square footage, adds 10% for trimming and seams, then divides by 9 to convert to square yards.
Worked example — a 15 ft × 12 ft room:
180 sq ft × 1.10 = 198 ÷ 9 = 22 square yards.
Mind the roll width
Carpet usually comes in 12 ft wide rolls. Rooms wider than 12 ft need a seam, which adds a little waste — the 10% allowance covers most cases.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert square feet to square yards?
Divide the square footage by 9 (a square yard is 3 ft × 3 ft).
How much extra carpet should I order?
About 10% for cuts and seams; more for stairs or oddly shaped rooms.
Planning a flooring or tile project
Buy the material for one room from the same product batch when possible. Layout, pattern direction, damaged pieces, and cuts around doors or cabinets affect waste, so a simple rectangular calculation is a starting point rather than a cutting plan.
How to use this estimate
- Measure the project in the units shown and recheck your measurements before ordering.
- Use the waste allowance as a planning buffer, not as a substitute for a detailed material takeoff.
- Compare the result with the package yield, coverage, or weight listed by your supplier.
- Prices are user-entered estimates and may change by location, product, delivery, and season.
