How this calculator works
The calculator uses standard manufacturer coverage rates for premixed all-purpose joint compound — lighter use for a quick 2-coat job, the typical 400 sq ft per 4.5-gallon pail for a standard 3-coat tape/fill/finish system, or much heavier use for a full skim coat over an entire wall or ceiling — then adds 10% for tooling and touch-ups.
500 × 1.10 ÷ 400 = 1.375 → 2 pails.
Why coverage drops so much for a skim coat
Taping only covers the joints themselves — a narrow strip along each seam. A full skim coat covers every square foot of the surface in a thin layer to hide texture or damage, so the same pail covers far less area than it would just taping joints.
Frequently asked questions
How many pails of joint compound do I need for 500 sq ft of drywall?
For a standard 3-coat tape/fill/finish job, plan on about 2 pails (4.5 gal each). A quick 2-coat job needs less; a full skim coat needs several times more.
How much area does a pail of joint compound cover?
A 4.5-gallon pail covers roughly 400 sq ft through a standard 3-coat finish, up to 600 sq ft for a light 2-coat job, but only about 150 sq ft if skim-coating the entire surface.
