How this calculator works

It places one stud every 16 or 24 inches along the wall and adds one for the end, then figures the top and bottom plate lumber as twice the wall length.

Worked example — a 20 ft wall at 16 in on center:
240 in ÷ 16 = 15, plus 1 end stud = 16 studs, plus 40 ft of plate lumber.

Add for openings and corners

Doors, windows and corners need extra studs (king studs, jacks, cripples). Add a few more studs per opening on top of this base count.

Frequently asked questions

How many studs do I need for a 20 ft wall?

About 16 studs at 16-inch spacing, before adding extras for openings and corners.

Is 16 or 24 inch spacing better?

16-inch is standard and stronger; 24-inch uses less lumber and is allowed for many non-load-bearing walls.
