How this calculator works

It calculates the volume of your path or patio, converts it to cubic yards, then to tons using a typical compacted decomposed granite weight of about 1.5 tons per cubic yard.

Worked example — a 20 ft × 5 ft path at 3 inches deep:
20 × 5 × (3 ÷ 12) = 25 cubic feet → ÷ 27 = 0.93 cubic yards → × 1.5 = 1.39 tons.

Decomposed granite vs. gravel

Decomposed granite (DG) contains fine particles that compact into a firm, sandy-textured surface — unlike loose gravel, which stays loose underfoot. That makes it a popular choice for walking paths and patios where a solid, walkable surface matters more than drainage.

Frequently asked questions

How many tons of decomposed granite do I need per cubic yard?

About 1.5 tons per cubic yard once compacted, though it varies slightly by moisture and particle size.

How deep should decomposed granite be for a path?

2–3 inches compacted is standard for a walking path. Driveways or patios that see more weight typically want 3–4 inches over a compacted base.
