How this calculator works

Seeding rates are quoted per 1,000 square feet. The calculator multiplies your lawn area by the rate for a new lawn or for overseeding an existing one.

Worked example — a 50 ft × 40 ft new lawn:
2,000 sq ft ÷ 1,000 × 5 = 10 pounds of seed.

New lawn vs. overseeding

Bare soil needs a heavier rate (about 5 lb per 1,000 sq ft); refreshing a thin existing lawn needs less (about 3 lb). Rates vary by grass type, so check the bag.

Frequently asked questions

How much grass seed per 1000 square feet?

About 5 lb for a new lawn and 3 lb for overseeding, depending on the grass species.

Can I use too much seed?

Yes — overcrowded seedlings compete and grow weak. Stick close to the recommended rate.
