How this calculator works

The calculator finds the perimeter of your bed and adds 5% for cuts around curves and corners — the same allowance used for sod — then converts it to whichever way your edging is sold: 20 ft flexible rolls or 4 ft rigid sections, each with the stakes needed to anchor it.

Worked example — a 20 ft × 10 ft bed with rigid sections:
2 × (20 + 10) × 1.05 = 63 ft → 63 ÷ 4 = 16 sections, with 32 stakes (2 per section).

Flexible vs. rigid edging

Flexible roll edging bends easily around curves and is cheaper per foot, making it the better fit for organic bed shapes. Rigid sections hold a straighter, cleaner line and resist lawn-mower damage better, which makes them the common choice for straight bed borders next to a lawn.
